LakeWatchers

Water Quality Monitoring Program Volunteer

  • LakeWatchers is a community-based lake water quality monitoring program initiated by Halifax Regional Municipality in 2022. The program monitors nearly 80 lakes across Halifax, Nova Scotia with the help of volunteers, as well as hired consultants.

Monitoring in nearly half of the lakes under our purview is completed by volunteers or community organizations, so we are always actively recruiting volunteers to grow program participation, particularly on lakes that are currently without a dedicated volunteer team.

Volunteers must have access to a boat or canoe and are asked to conduct lake water sampling twice per year – once in the Spring (April/May) and again in the Summer (August/September).

The required sampling equipment is provided by HRM and training workshops, as well as individual training sessions, are provided to prospective volunteers.

For more information, please visit www.halifax.ca/lakewatchers or contact water@halifax.ca.
