The federal government has promised to introduce nature accountability legislation into Parliament by June 2024. This legislation would establish a statutory framework to ensure Canada's accountability for achieving the goals and targets of the 2022 Global Biodiversity Framework.

At the meeting, Stephen Hazell, a consultant with Ecojustice and retired lawyer, will discuss the likely contents of the bill and its similarities with the 2021 climate change accountability law. Stephen will describe the critical elements of the legislation proposed by Ecojustice, Greenpeace, and West Coast Environmental Law and how the legislation would support the national biodiversity strategy and action plan also being developed. He will also suggest actions Biodiversity Caucus members can take to engage with federal politicians and officials to ensure a strong bill is enacted. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions following the presentation.
