Elizabeth Dowdeswell and Ahmed Djoghlaf to Speak at 2010 RCEN Conference
The RCEN is very happy to announce that Ms. Elizabeth Dowdeswell will be giving the keynote speech on Saturday, September 18th. Ms. Dowdeswell is the current President of the Council of Canadian Academies and the former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.
We are also honoured to announce that Dr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, will officially open the event on the same night. In line with the International Year of Biodiversity, the theme of the conference is “Conserving Biodiversity Pays: The Values of Ecosystem Services”.

Celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity this May 22nd
On May 22nd, organizations across the globe will be raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity to sustainable development and the attainment of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. The theme of this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) in 2010 is Biodiversity for Development and Poverty Alleviation.
In Canada, the RCEN is supporting key environmental NGOs to organize outreach and educational activities in every province and territory. Thirteen groups have been selected to promote the importance of biodiversity for development and to help Canadians learn how they can make a difference. View our interactive map of IDB events
Biodiversity Hotspot #7: Blow a Bubble for Bubblegum Coral!
Who knew that you could find bubble gum in the frigid North Atlantic waters? Bubblegum coral, named for its likeness to the Bazooka Joe treat, can grow up to 3 meters high and is one of 27 species of cold water corals found off the coasts of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. These corals were only discovered 10 years ago, and already they are deemed vulnerable marine ecosystems. Read More
