RCEN Concludes Executive Director contract
It is with immense regret that I must announce to you that Hans Herrmann’s role as Executive Director of the Canadian Environmental Network has officially ended March 31, 2012. After an assessment of the organisation’s current financial capacity, the Board of Directors faced the unfortunate and difficult decision of not renewing the contract for the Executive Director position - and this for an undetermined period of time.
Last fall, the Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN) received notice from Environment Canada that it would not pursue with core funding of the organisation - despite their letter of intent shared months prior. Understanding that Environment Canada had been RCEN’s main financial contributor and partner for the past three decades, it was clear such a turn-around on the eleventh-hour would greatly jeopardize what is the most critical environmental constituency of the Government of Canada. This unexpected news has put enormous pressure on the organisation, forcing layoff of all staff, to the exception of one intern (at the time) and up until recently, the Executive Director, Mr. Hans Herrmann.
In the seven months Hans has served as Executive Director for RCEN, he has demonstrated exceptional flexibility, initiative and commitment - considering the unforeseen change in tide early into his mandate, and the many adjustments, challenges, and heavy workload accompanying this.
As Chair of the Board of Directors, and as a friend and colleague, I am sad to see Hans part with our organisation. His experience, passion and resourcefulness have proven to be a great asset to the Network, and an inspiration to more than one, and for this I am extremely grateful.
On behalf of the RCEN Board of Directors, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hans for all his work and wish him much success in all future endeavours.
